Study of Ukrainian cities

The main objective of the study is to investigate attractiveness of cities with population over 100,000 (overall, 45 Ukrainian cities covered) for carrying on business and to estimate development potential for each city. The report on the Study of Ukrainian Cities is updated annually starting from 2007 during first quarter of the year.

Both official statistics data and results of surveys conducted by GfK Ukraine (more than 20 000 interviews in each wave) are used in this research.

The study allows:

  • comparing company’s performance in different cities/regions of Ukraine, considering their economy and development potential;
  • analyzing reasons of inefficiency/ poor efficiency in business in different cities/regions of Ukraine;
  • evaluating each city’s potential concerning establishing/developing business there.

The objective of the research are to estimate/analyze:

  • well-being level of the population in each city, total income of the city population, equality of the city population by income;
  • status of economy of each city, development prospects of each city;
  • demographic situation in cities.

To conduct this research we use the following data sources:

  1. Household surveys, performed by GfK Ukraine during 2008-2011 (this source provided data on wellbeing, some of the demographic indicators, employment and labor force indicators). These indicators were compared in two periods — Period 1 (average values for 2008-2010) and Period 2 (average values for 2009-2011);
  2. State Statistics Committee of Ukraine (this source provided data about urban economy for 2003-2010);
  3. All Ukrainian census 2001 (data on some of demographic indicators).
